Animation made with AI · 2026
有用吗?Is It Useful?
A 66-second bilingual animation about why people learn languages, made from a short reflection I wrote for a student's writing project. I directed an AI agent through eight versions to get from that text to this video.
How it was made
My part
- Wrote the brief from my own text and teaching context.
- Reviewed eight versions and steered each revision: content, colour, lettering and music.
- Chose the final colours and Chinese font from rendered options.
- Had the English translations proofread and approved the corrections.
- Specified the learner-progress scene: pinyin, then a word, then sentences of growing difficulty.
The AI's part
- Claude (Anthropic) wrote and ran all the code that drew the frames, synthesized the music and assembled the video.
- Proposed the visual concepts, translations and learner sentences for me to accept or redirect.

The original text
有些人说学习语言并没有什么用处,他们说你应该学习一个有用的技能,不要花那么多时间学习语言。但是,很多人学习语言是因为他们喜欢学习语言,没有什么别的原因,就好像有人喜欢画画,他们就会去花很多时间画画。希望我们都能有这种自由去学习我们喜欢的东西。
Some people say learning languages isn't of much use. They say you should learn a useful skill and not spend so much time learning languages. But many people learn languages because they love learning them, for no other reason. It's just like someone who loves painting: they'll spend hours and hours painting. I hope we can all have the freedom to learn what we love.
The prompt
One of my students interviewed me on my view about language learning and Chinese language teaching for a writing project. I was teaching Chinese language and culture courses at a university at that time. I wrote a few sentences for his project: 有些人说学习语言并没有什么用处,他们说你应该学习一个有用的技能,不要花那么多时间学习语言。但是,很多人学习语言是因为他们喜欢学习语言,没有什么别的原因,就好像有人喜欢画画,他们就会去花很多时间画画。希望我们都能有这种自由去学习我们喜欢的东西。Based on your understanding of this context and my sentences, please create a short video about your understanding of my sentences and language learning. Use your imagination for the video. You can also create a few versions.
